Maurice M. Kane

Maurice M. Kane, M.D., 100, of Greenville, passed away Thursday morning, August 28, 2008 at Reid Hospital in Richmond, IN. He was born in Toldeo, OH son of the late John G. and Bertha E. (Robinson) Kane. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth L. Kane and two sisters, Harriett Simpson and Katharine Chapman. Dr. Kane moved from Toledo to Columbus in 1916 where he lived until 1936. He received a B.A. degree in 1931 and his Medical Doctorate degree in 1933 from Ohio State University. He had served as the Medical Examiner for the State of Ohio Industrial Commission, Bureau of Workmen's Compensation from 1934-1936. He began his medical practice in Greenville in 1936 and continued till 1977 when he retired. After being appointed to the active medical staff at Wayne Hospital, Dr. Kane established and setup the Coronary Care and Intensive Care Units at the hospital. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the hospital for several years. Following his retirement he was appointed to the Honorary Medical Staff of Wayne Hospital. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was commissioned in June 1933 as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Reserve. He served in active duty from January 1941 to March 1946 as a Medical Officer in the 8th and 88th Infantry Divisions. As a Lieutenant Colonel he commanded the 313th Medical Battalion, a Unit of the 88th Division, serving overseas in North Africa and Italy. He received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army Medical Reserves in 1953. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and belonged to the Dayton Scottish Rite and Antioch Temple. He was a member of the Greenville Elk's Lodge, the Ohio State Medical Association and the American Medical Association. Following retirement he spent winters in Arizona, the Carolina's and Florida. He enjoyed fishing most of his life. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte L. (Eley) Kane; and two nieces, Jeanne (George) Tolford of Tiffin, OH and Roberta (Dave) Will of Columbus, OH. A Masonic service followed by Military Honors will be held Monday, September 1, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will take place at a later date in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 1-2 p.m. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be given to either the Shriner's Children's Hospitals and Burn Institute or a charitable organization of the donor's choice.
